History Of The Eatery

One If By Land Two If By Sea is an amazing restaurant located at the very heart of West Village. The restaurant is known for its elegant menu, elegant decor, and chic atmosphere. However, things are more than what it seems. Behind the shiny veneer of the present, there lies a dark and murky history that adds character to this place.

History Of The Eatery

The restaurant might be one of the prime places to visit, but it is certainly not a place where you want to wander alone. The history of ‘One If By Land Two If By Sea’, is a history that is filled with gruesome death, mysterious disappearance, prostitution, and even rape. A source suggests that there are at least 20 different shadow people. However, most of these spirits are not so friendly towards the guests. Historians believe that this is because of the bloody history of the hotel.

This eatery was primarily built by the original owner, Aaron Burr, as a carriage house back in 1767. Later in 1790, Aaron Burr moved in with his daughter Theodosia. Apparently, Burr was a single father and was very close to his daughter. In fact, the closeness was often misinterpreted by many.

The Terrible Rumor

A terrible rumor was started by a man named Alexander Hamilton. According to Hamilton, the relationship Burr shared with his daughter was questionable and illegitimate. Eventually, the rumor-mongering resulted in a blood feud. Burr and Hamilton agreed to meet outside Weehawken, New Jersey, on the morning of July 11, 1804 for a shootoff. In the shoot off or duel Burr manages to kill Hamilton, and this initiates a terrible chapter in Burr’s life. Apparently, Burr lost everything he had.

Burr eventually lost his wealth, reputation, political career, and his house. And the house kept on changing hands till it reached its current owners. The current owners of this property managed to transform this place into an eatery. However, even if you are alone, you are not really alone in this eatery.

The Hauntings.

It is natural for a place like One If By Land Two If By Sea to attract otherworldly entities. The primary reason is that the place has seen a lot of death and misery. Employees, as well as guests, have said that they felt like they were being watched. For some unforeseen reasons, female guests and employees feel very uncomfortable while sitting at the hotel’s bar counter. Some females even reported that they felt their earrings being tugged at. While others claimed that they were being scratched.

The Hauntings.

One of the specters who frequent the halls of this revered eatery is the daughter of the man himself, Theodosia Burr. It is believed that Theodosia moved to Charleston, South Carolina, after her father’s downfall. She usually visited her father once every two months. On such trips, her boat mysteriously disappeared into the fog, never to be heard from again. Several theories were explored, but nothing bore fruit at all. Guests often reported seeing Theodosia standing in the windows of the second floor or walking up and down the stairs of the eatery. She is mostly benevolent and does not interact with the living. However, some guests accuse her of nicking pieces of jewelry from the guests.

Aaron Burr

The second ghost that roams the hallways of the hotel is Aaron Burr himself. Unlike Theodosia, Aaron is said to be more unhinged and volatile. Apparently, guests had felt a strong malevolent presence. In fact, a psychic who conducted a mirror scrying session in this hotel said that she had actually seen a hefty-looking man in period clothing. According to historians, Aaron Burr was a big and violent man at times. He was known to pick fights with people who he hated.

The Kitchen area of the restaurant is said to be one of the most active spots. Naturally, a group of ghost hunters were conducting a spirit box session in the kitchen area of the hotel. And in one of those sessions, they picked up a deep male voice saying ‘get out’ and ‘my house.’ This is something consistent with other accounts of witnesses who said that they heard angry whispers. Other times, people noted that there was a strong stench of sulfur coming from the restaurant’s stairways.

These are some of the most prominent and significant ghostly experiences of the famous One If By Land Two If By Sea.
