Pragser Wildsee – A Beautiful Destination For Tourists
Pragser Wildsee, also known as LAGO DI BRAIES, is a beautiful destination for tourists in Italy. I am a travel blogger, and I have been traveling around the globe since 2010. And I must admit that this is one of the unique places I’ve been to.
It is a beautiful lake in the dolomites of Northern Italy. You can visit this lake in both summer and winter. But I’d suggest you visit Pragser Wildsee in summer as apart from enjoying the scenic beauty you will be able to do many fun activities.
If you are wondering how to get there, worry, as, in the article, I will guide you through all the nitty-gritty of praiser Wildsee. In August, back in 2019, my family and I went to visit this place.
A Brief History Of Pragser Wildsee Aka Lago Di Braies
Pragser Wildsee is in Braies Valley, which is located in the South Tyrolean Dolomites. It is a part of the UNESCO heritage site. Trust me when I say this, it should have been listed as the 8th wonder of the world. This magnificent lake is a part of Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park.
This beautiful lake by the mountain is referred to as the pearl of the dolomite lake. Not only is it one of the most beautiful lakes, but it is also the deepest, with a depth of 40kms. Located 1500kms above sea level, this is a destination where tourists from all over the world flock to witness this scenic beauty.
Why Did I Visit Pragser Wildsee/ Lago Di Braie?
There is not any exact single reason why I visited there, as I am a travel blogger I pretty much travel to every corner of the world. I often get sponsored by hotels and other brands, which makes my travel free of cost, but upon hearing about Pragser Wildsee from my friend, I wanted to visit it.
It was about time I spent some quality time with my family as I stay out most of the time traveling around the world, my two little beautiful children don’t get to see me as much as I would have liked. So I thought I had to make sure to plan a proper trip to somewhere I could take my family to. Let’s face it, you don’t want to take your family especially two kids of six and seven years to certain parts of the world.
I did not want to make this trip as some sort of sponsored or work-related trip because I truly wanted to enjoy some quality time with family, keeping away my travel journal, so I took my wife and kids and visited Pragser Wildsee.
To be honest, I was a little skeptical at first and wondered what could be possible so fascinating about a lake but trust me; it’s worth your time and money. It’s a place for nature lovers—people who are into bird watching, hiking, professional photography.
If you love doing nature photography, then this is the place you need to take photographs of. Pragser Wildsee has crystal clear water, which makes it no short of a wonder. The environment is family-friendly, so it’s a perfect place to be with your family.
When Is The Best Time To Visit Pragser Wildsee?
Like I said previously, visiting Pragser Wildsee Italy is preferable in the summer because it snows a lot during the winter. So you might find the lake frozen during the winter. If you visit it during the summer season, you and your family can row a boat on the beautiful lake.
But the thing to note is that during the summer season, the place becomes overcrowded between June and August, especially on Sundays. As I said, I went there in August, so it was pretty crowded. I had seen many popular Instagram and Youtube influencers at Pragser Wildsee, making several attempts to take the ‘perfect Insta pic.’
What Are The Fun Activities You Can Do During Your Visit To Pragser Wildsee?
If you are looking for some ‘me time’ at Pragser Wildsee Italy, I suggest you arrive before 7:00 am. I went there at 10 am as I like to watch people have fun and furthermore. I was with my family, so I did not intend to spend my time.
1. Take A Dip
If you plan on bathing and swimming in the green lake, I have good news and bad news for you. The good news is yes, you may swim in the lake, but the bad news is that the water is extremely cold, so be mentally prepared for it. I tried to get in the water, but I could barely dip my ankles in the water.
2. Row A Boat
This is the one activity that everybody visiting Pragser Wildsee indulges in. However, keep in mind that you can’t go for boat rowing in the winter season as the water is completely frozen. The best time for boat rowing is in the summer that is from June to mid-September. People offering boat rental services are available near the lake, and the time is between 1 am and 5 pm.
The price for rowing a boat is 15 euros for 30 minutes and 30 euros for 1 hour. The locals say that boats were the only mode of transportation near that region back in the day.
3. Have A Meal At Hotel Pragser Wildsee
If you visit there with your family, I am sure you will not have enough time to indulge in all the fun activities the region provides. I highly suggest you visit Hotel Pragser Wildsee. You can enjoy a cup of coffee with your family or enjoy lunch.
They serve all sorts of European cuisine. My personal favorite was the chicken lasagne. You can try it if you want to enjoy a delicious meal with your family.
4. Say A Little Prayer In Chapel Lago Di Braies
There’s a small church in this region, which you can spot from the lake’s shores—locally known as “Cappella Lago di Braies.” This little church has a ton of history associated with it. It was built back in the 19th century and was involved in the events of World War II.
The locals say that many Italian prisoners of war were liberated near the shores of Pragser Wildsee, and they prayed in ‘Cappella Lago di Braies’.
How Do I Get To Pragser Wildsee?
Almost all the famous airports in Italy like Venice, Verona, and Bozen are near this region, so if you are coming from a foreign country like me, it would not be hard.
I won’t be able to tell you much if you are coming from Italy or any other European nations via trains as I have personally not traveled by a train route. However, from what I heard from some of my Italian friends. You can get there by deboarding at Station Niederdorf from there you can get buses to Pragser Wildsee very easily.
Things to Know Before Visiting Lake Braies or Lago Di Braies
As one of the most famous attractions of South Tyrol in Italy, Lake Braise attracts many tourists from around the world. It is one of the most beautiful lakes in the entire world as well. If you are planning to visit here, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Here are a few things you need to keep in mind if you are going to visit this place –
Parking:
If you are going to visit this lake by car, you’ll need a parking space. The good news is: there are three parking spaces here called P2, P3, P4 etc and all of them are free.
However, if you are visiting the place during the peak season, the parking space is going to become cramped and difficult to get your space in. It’s best to reach the place by 9 A.M in the morning if you don’t want to run out of parking space.
Swimming
Usually, the water temperature in the region is around 15 degrees C. Yes, we are talking about the water temperature in summer. SO, if you are planning to swim in the lake, it’s best to have your swimming gears ready. But, know that the water is going to be cold.
Boat Ride
A fun thing to do in this location is to take a boat ride. However, remember that the boat ride can cost quite a lot if you were looking for something like that. You will need around €50 for a boat ride. Also, each of the boat ride can take up to 5 people and the ride lasts for around 45 minutes. In most cases, the boat rides are like first come first served. But, in some places, you might have to book the boat ride in advance.
Location
If you are visiting this place, it’s best to know about the geography of the area. The lake is in the municipal area and it’s elevated 1500 m above the sea level. The lake has around 17 m of depth in average. The deepest point of the lake is around 36 m deep.
Final Thoughts
I have said it once, and I will say it again if you are a fan of enjoying scenic beauty or someone who wants to spend a peaceful time with his/her family, then this place is a must-visit for you.
Do note that there is not much scope for indulging in many fun activities in Pragser Wildsee, so if you go there looking for those, you might be disappointed. But I’d highly suggest you visit this place as the mere beauty and atmosphere of this place will take your breath away.
