What Is The Best Time To Visit Waterfalls Near Chennai?
Ideally, Monsoon is the season when all the waterfalls near Chennai are the most glorious. However, the months of July to September have torrential rainfall in Chennai. Further, the average days of rainfall in these months are 20-25 days.
So, visiting the waterfalls during the Monsoon is a dangerous outdoor pursuit. Furthermore, the water in the waterfalls and the lake beneath carry a massive undercurrent during these months.
Nevertheless, October to March is the best time to visit the waterfalls near Chennai. The waterfalls are fed with rainwater after the fresh monsoon season. However, the perils of heavy rainfalls or slippery terrains are not there.
Waterfalls Near Chennai Within 100 Kms And Beyond
Chennai does not have a waterfall. Also, most waterfalls near Chennai are at least at a distance of around 200 Kms.
So, here, I have introduced waterfalls like the Tada Falls, Nagalapuram, and Kailasa Kona Falls. These three are well within 100 Kms from Chennai. However, I have also enlisted some beautiful waterfalls beyond 100 Kms to create a delightful weekend tourism guide for you.
1. Tada Falls/Ubbalamadugu Waterfalls
- Location: Tirupati District, Andhra Pradesh
- Distance from Chennai: 91 Kms
- Height: 100 Meters
Nestled in the Nallamala Hills, Tada or Ubbalamadugu Waterfalls is a popular destination for camping, hiking, and trekking. The water flow in the fall keeps varying with rainfall and other seasonal changes.
Further, you will find diverse flora and fauna around the Tada Falls. It is also ideal for wildlife spotting.
Traveling to Tada Falls from Chennai is easy. The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) operates bus services between Ubbalamadugu Waterfalls and Chennai.
You can even take a drive to Tada village and trek to the Tada Falls from there.
2. Nagalapuram Waterfalls
- Location: Nagalapuram, Tirupati District, Andhra Pradesh
- Distance from Chennai: 68.9 Kms
- Height: 30-40 Feet
Nagalapuram has 5-7 waterfalls, and you will reach each waterfall after a hard walk of 20-25 minutes. The first falls are deep and after a climb of 20-25 minutes there, you will reach the Second Waterfalls.
Climb for another 20-25 minutes from here to reach the third waterfall. Here, water cascades from a height of 40 feet and forms a deep pool.
The trek to Nagalapuram Waterfalls is pretty difficult as you have to pass through narrow passages. However, the serene beauty of the waterfalls and the majestic Nagalapuram Mountain will take all your fatigue and fear away.
Nagalapuram is well-connected to the road, and a road trip is the best to reach the waterfalls from Chennai.
3. Kailasa Kona Falls
- Location: Narayanavanam Mandal, Tirupati district, Andhra Pradesh
- Distance from Chennai: 91.4 Kms
- Height: Around 40 Feet
The Andhra Pradesh Government has acknowledged that Kailasa Kona Falls is a popular tourist attraction for the people of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Further, one of the best waterfalls near Chennai, Kailasa Kona Falls, is an important eco-tourism destination in the state.
Kailasa Kona Falls consists of three waterfalls, and they are perennial in nature. Further, it has a nearby temple where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are worshipped.
The cheapest way to reach the Kailasa Kona Falls is by taking a Chennai to Nagalapuram train. Further, bus services and car rentals are also available on this route.
4. Agaya Gangaiwaterfalls

- Location: Kolli Hills, Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu
The Agaya Gangaiwaterfalls are in the beautiful Kolli Hills on the Eastern Ghat. The Kolli Hills is the hub of many medicinal plants.

Agaya Gangaiwaterfalls is close to Salem Railway Station. You can take a taxi ride to Agaya Gangaiwaterfalls from there.
5. Mamandur Forest Waterfalls

- Location: Chittoor, Tirupati District, Andhra Pradesh
The Mamandur Forest Waterfalls in Mamanduru Forest are important for the ecotourism of Mamandur. Composer Annamacharya walked through this path for the Darshan of Lord Balaji.
Further, Mamanduru Forest is the place where the “last sighting of Asiatic Cheetah” was recorded.
Along with the waterfall, the forest has holy shrines, caves, springs, and rock paintings. Furthermore, the forest is Seshachalam Hills, which is an important biosphere reserve.

- Height: 300 Feet
Also known as the “Guardian of Waterfalls,” Shivanasamudra has Gaganachukki Barachukki. Further, you can offer your prayers at the Ranganatha temple in Shivanasamudra.
You can also visit the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary. It is the ideal place for trekking and fishing.
Shivanasamudra Falls is close to the Mysore Airport and Railway Station. So, it is easily accessible from Chennai and other parts of the country.
7. Kailasa Kona Waterfalls

- Location: Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh
- Height: 40 Feet
Kailasa Kona Waterfalls is one of the perennial waterfalls near Chennai. It is associated with many mythological stories.
According to myths, the waterfall gets its name from Kailasanatheshwara, who convened the marriage of Lord Venkateshwara Swami and his consort, Goddess Padmavati.
Furthermore, the water of this waterfall is rich in minerals. So, it has many healing properties.
Nature walks and hiking are two popular activities near this beautiful waterfall. However, swimming is not allowed here.
Moreover, this waterfall, just 50 Km away from Tirupati, can be easily accessed by road.
